How to crop an image

  1. Choose an image

Select a JPG, PNG or WebP photo from your device, or drag it onto the upload area.

  2. Select the area to keep

Drag the box to move it and drag its corners or edges to resize it. Pick a ratio like 1:1 for an exact shape.

  3. Crop and download

Check the cropped image and its size, then download it.

Which aspect ratio should you use?

1:1
Profile pictures, avatars and square social posts
4:3
Many phone and compact camera photos, tablets and presentations
3:2
Most DSLR and mirrorless photos, and 6×4 inch prints
16:9
Widescreen displays, video thumbnails and banners
Free
Any shape: remove distractions or tighten the framing

The ratio only fixes the shape. How many pixels you keep depends on how large you make the crop box.

Cropping vs resizing

Cropping cuts away the edges of an image and keeps the part you select at its original resolution. Resizing scales the whole image up or down without removing anything. If you need an exact size, such as 1080 × 1080 pixels, crop to the right shape first and then use the Image Resizer.

Frequently asked questions

Is this image cropper free?

Yes. It's free, with no sign-up, no watermarks and no limit on how many images you crop.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Your image is cropped by your own browser, on your device. It is never uploaded.

How do I crop a picture into a square?

Choose the 1:1 aspect ratio. The crop box becomes a square that stays square while you move and resize it, so the result has equal width and height.

Does cropping reduce image quality?

The area you keep is taken from your original image at full resolution; it isn't scaled. PNG images are saved losslessly, and JPG and WebP images are saved at high quality, so any difference is very hard to see.

Is transparency kept when I crop a PNG or WebP?

Yes. Transparent areas stay transparent in PNG and WebP images. JPG images don't support transparency.

What format is the cropped image saved in?

The same format as your original. Safari can't create WebP files, so to crop a WebP image in Safari, use another browser or convert it to JPG first.

Can I crop photos on my phone?

Yes. Drag the crop box and its corners with your finger. Photos from phone cameras are shown the right way up, and location and camera details are removed from the cropped image.
