Should you convert your PNG to JPG?

JPG is the most widely accepted image format, and it is much smaller than PNG for photos. That makes it a good choice for sharing, email, and upload forms with size limits.

PNG is better for screenshots, logos and graphics with text, where JPG compression can blur fine edges. It is also the right choice when you need a transparent background, because a JPG always has a solid one. If you want a smaller file that keeps transparency, the Image Compressor can save your PNG as WebP.

Frequently asked questions

Is this PNG to JPG converter free?

Yes. It's free, with no sign-up, no watermarks and no limit on how many images you convert.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Your PNG is converted in your browser, on your device. It is never uploaded.

What happens to a transparent background?

JPG can't store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid colour. White is used by default, and you can choose black or a custom colour before converting.

Can I keep the transparency?

Not in a JPG. If you need transparency, keep the image as a PNG, or use WebP, which supports transparency and is usually much smaller than PNG.

Will the JPG be smaller than the PNG?

For photos it usually is, often by a lot. For screenshots, logos and simple graphics the difference can be small, and JPG may make sharp edges and text look slightly blurry.

What quality is the JPG saved at?

A high quality setting (92 out of 100), so the JPG looks close to the original PNG. To make the file smaller still, compress it afterwards.

Is there a file size limit?

You can convert PNG images up to 50 MB and up to 100 megapixels.
